New diesel engine oil classifications — what you need to know

12/08/2016

To meet the needs of some new engine designs, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has introduced two new diesel engine oil classifications: FA-4 and CK-4. It is extremely important to understand these new classifications to prevent catastrophic engine damage that may occur if the wrong oil is used.

FA-4 is intended to help maximize fuel efficiency in engines that are designed for FA-4 and must only be used in engines that specifically call for the use of FA-4 oil. Engine manufacturers strongly warn that FA-4 is not compatible with other engines. DO NOT use FA-4 in Doosan equipment. The use of FA-4 engine oil is not approved and may cause irreversible damage to the engine.

CK-4 is API’s upgrade from CJ-4, designed to provide superior performance in the areas of oxidation, aeration and shear stability. Doosan is constantly evaluating the best solutions to maximize uptime and lower operating costs for the machine owner. We are working with all of our engine suppliers to evaluate CK-4 performance before changing from the current CJ-4 recommendation. Doosan engine oil will remain the CJ-4 formulation until engine testing is complete and formal approval of CK-4 is final.

The new oil classifications may already be available in some markets. Be sure to inform your customers that engine oil formulas are designed to meet the needs of the engine and application. Now more than ever, making the right choice is critical to engine performance and longevity. Doosan engine oil is uniquely formulated to meet the needs of Doosan equipment and is always the preferred choice.
